Membership Terms & Conditions
This document sets out the terms and conditions that apply to membership of Sound Sense and is entered into with the named individual or corporate subscriber. Sound Sense reserves the right to change these Terms & Conditions at any time and will communicate changes to all members.
1. Member benefits
Membership of Sound Sense entitles subscribers to some, or all, of a range of benefits including public liability insurance, access to DBS checks, editions of magazines, email newsletters, discounts at events and training and other services as offered. These services may alter from time to time, and the current offer is always listed on our website. Member benefits vary according to the category of membership, and you should check carefully that you have the category of membership that is most appropriate to you/your organisation. For full details of Sound Sense member benefits visit: https://www.soundsense.org/member-services/membership-benefits
2. Changes to your subscription
Membership is not transferable and may not be re-sold under any circumstances. However you may change your category of membership at any time, should your needs or circumstances change, by contacting us on info@soundsense.org.
3. Minimum term
Membership runs for a minimum term of one year, starting from the date we receive your first payment or Direct Debit instruction. Thereafter, membership runs annually from the anniversary of your membership start date.
4. Membership fees and renewals
Current membership prices can be found on the Sound Sense website: https://www.soundsense.org/member-services/membership-benefits
Membership fees are payable in quarterly instalments by Direct Debit or PayPal Subscription. If you pay by quarterly Direct Debit or PayPal Subscription, your membership will automatically renew at the end of each yearly membership period unless you let us know otherwise (see section 6: Cancellations).
If quarterly payments are not suitable for you, we may agree to take annual payments by bank transfer or PayPal payment. Please contact us on info@soundsense.org if you would like to make annual payments. Memberships paid for annually do not automatically renew and it is your responsibility to ensure timely renewal each year in order to avoid loss of benefits.
Your membership will lapse and become void if payment is not received after 30 days from the date due. Any member benefits will cease once your membership has lapsed.
5. Public liability insurance
Sound Sense members paying the appropriate subscription (the “Individual” rate, previously known as "Individual, earning") are automatically covered by £10m public and products liability insurance. The policy covers individuals working on any activity connected to community music, music therapy, or teaching of music requiring insurance against their legal liabilities to pay compensation arising out of injury to thirds parties and damage to third party property.
Full policy details are available on our website at:
https://www.soundsense.org/member-services/insurance
Members insured by Sound Sense are listed online in our Find a Musician directory of members:
https://www.soundsense.org/find-a-musician
Personalised insurance certificates can be downloaded directly from the member-only pages of the Sound Sense website. If you have any issues downloading your insurance certificate, please contact us on info@soundsense.org and we will issue a certificate to you by email.
6. Cancellations
You have the right to cancel your membership at any time after your first year of membership (the “minimum term”). If you decide to cancel, we regret that we cannot provide a refund for any unused portion of your subscription.
To cancel your membership, you should contact us in writing using the contact details below.
Sound Sense reserves the right to cancel your membership at any time should we anticipate that it will not be possible to continue to provide membership benefits and services for a continuous period of 90 days or more. However, Sound Sense shall endeavour to give members reasonable advance notice if we intend to withdraw services or benefits on a permanent basis.
7. Legal responsibilities
Becoming a member of Sound Sense carries no legal responsibility for the member in respect of Sound Sense, nor does it automatically carry voting rights at board elections, meetings or the AGM, or liability in respect of any debts of Sound Sense. The term ‘member’ is the name used to describe the group of people or organisations that access Sound Sense services and benefits via a subscription programme.
8. AGM and voting rights
We will contact you in writing (by email or post) to give you notice of our Annual General Meeting, to which all Sound Sense members are welcome to attend.
You can become a Voting Member by contacting Sound Sense by email, and including the message:
“I want to have voting rights within Sound Sense. Should Sound Sense be wound up while my membership is current or within one year after it has lapsed, I agree to pay the sum of up to £1.00 towards any debts it may have.
NAME and EMAIL"
(Because Sound Sense is a company limited by guarantee, then in the very unlikely event that it ever becomes insolvent you’d be asked to pay a pound (that’s the ‘guarantee’ bit) and never any more (that’s the ‘limited’ bit), towards its debts)
Send the email to asa.malmsten@soundsense.org, who will respond to confirm you have become a voting member, entitling you to vote at Sound Sense board elections (once a year) and at the AGM.
9. Sound Sense is committed to safeguarding your personal information.
From time to time, you will be asked to submit personal information about yourself (such as name, email/postal addresses etc) in order for Sound Sense to provide you with the membership services we offer. Whenever you provide such information, we are legally obliged to use your information in line with all laws concerning the protection of personal information, including the General Data Protection Regulation 2018. For full information on how we use your information, please read our privacy policy at:
